Computer time synchronization is very important in modern computer networks, precision and time synchronization is critical in many applications, particularly time-critical transactions. It means – if is not executed after the deadline, businessman / restaurateur a PA-DSS validated application, they will not automatically their PCI assessment and possibly may lose their ability to accept credit cards.

Deadline for compliance:
January 1, 2004? All bought new Point of Sale (POS) PIN Entry Devices must pass testing by a Visa recognized laboratory and have been approved by Visa.
1st July 2010? Prescribes that all must have passed deployed POS PEDs testing by a PCI recognized laboratory and was approved by the PCI SSC.
What does this mean? All traders / landlords have two years to replace older, UN-approved PEDs.

Ok… here’s the thing. Us actual computer people in the field use (and appreciate) grammar, spelling, and all the other things that make the English language READABLE. We don’t use “b” instead of be, we use punctuation, etc etc.
You have no idea what Linux is (as you stated) but you are very much interested in it. If you REALLY are interested, you would have read up on Linux and knew all kinds of things about it already.
In the end… you can know all sorts of things about Linux, but if the company you work for is running a Microsoft network, what good was it? If you try Linux and decide you like it, you’ll be looking for a job with a company that uses Linux.

how fast would the transfer rate be on a 2004 maxtor 3.5 series diamondmax plus 8 ata/133 40gb hdd?

As this is a seriously old HDD, don’t expect too much. The 133 indicates it ’should’ transfer at 133 MB/sec. This I have never seen. The Best I Have Seen is around 80 MB/sec. An average I would expect is around the 50 MB/sec range, give or take 5 to 10 MB. I would expect your file of 60 MB to transfer in about a minute. If you are seeing longer times, say about 10 minutes or more, the drive is in the process of dying. These old Maxtors had a pretty terrible reputation and are almost all gone. Save as much data as you can and prepare for the worst, as it IS coming.
Seriously, I still have one of these in use and I trust it very little as the other 4 I had have ALL died. Rust in pieces.
