PCI & Credit Card Security: Background

Restaurateurs and their customers have long to enjoy the amenities that they receive on credit and debit cards for many years. But given the high costs and rapid increase and the frequency of credit fraud, large card brands such as Visa, Master Card, American Express, Discover and JCB have taken preventive measures to secure their stakeholders.

IBM has a new magnetic strip on credit cards in 1968 and became the industry standard. Since the length of data is easy to read and copy the magnetic strip on cards of that brand, built the Payment Card Industry Security Standards Council, a number of standards to ensure cardholder data, and it begins with the directive: "Keep You no trace of data. The standards of the PCI

There is the three-pronged approach that the PCI Security Standards Council for the protection of consumers, retailers / restaurateurs and banks were:

Deadlines for Compliance:

1st October 2008? Only the software that is compatible with the new payment application security standards is to be used by agents, merchants and payment processors.

1st October 2009? Termination of any irregular payment applications, the dealers or in its environment could be required.

1st July 2010? Does the use of only those applications that support the new payment standards.

It means – if is not executed after the deadline, businessman / restaurateur a PA-DSS validated application, they will not automatically their PCI assessment and possibly may lose their ability to accept credit cards.

* Pin Entry Devices (PED) standard – applies to all PEDs and it is to ensure that PIN, the cardholder and all sensitive information is consistently protected to a PIN acceptance device, such as your residence keys.

Deadline for compliance:

January 1, 2004? All bought new Point of Sale (POS) PIN Entry Devices must pass testing by a Visa recognized laboratory and have been approved by Visa.

1st July 2010? Prescribes that all must have passed deployed POS PEDs testing by a PCI recognized laboratory and was approved by the PCI SSC.

What does this mean? All traders / landlords have two years to replace older, UN-approved PEDs.

The Do's with the Payment Card Industry (PCI)

* Do routine Vulnerability scans of your systems.

* Do security awareness training for all employees.

* Do tests of network access.

* Your to monitor system activity logs.

* Separated employees should no longer have access privileges.

* Do not install software patches.

* When it comes to any threat, be serious – an incident response plan in place.

The Don'ts of the Payment Card Industry (PCI)

* You must not store or archive all credit card numbers.

* Never transmit credit card data encryption.

Either the two round prong or the two flat blade prong (similar to the US) are used in Thailand. Some places will have one or the other, and some places have plugs that accept both. Adaptors are cheap everywhere, buy one of each to be safe.
