I recently just bought a Quad Core AMD Phenom processor and was wondering if the pre-applied thermal pad was ‘good enough’ or should I strip it and apply some grease instead?
If Heat Sink already has a pad, which most do now. I would use it, but paste thermal compound works also. As far as I know if applied properly and good quality thermal compound there is not much of a performance difference.

Pssshh, you kidding me? My gaming PC is a Mini-ITX build. I’m answering your question with it right now and it’s always turned on day and night.
The E5200 processor is running at 32°C and the 9600GT video card is 50°C at the moment. Even though the system is smaller, it can be run just as long as any other system can. Granted most Mini ITX cases will be slightly warmer than a typical desktop PC, but definitely not enough to be considered overheating when in use.
Included a picture of my mini ITX PC below! The switch sitting on top there I have since mounted on the front of the case to switch on and off the red cold cathode tubes inside. Whee!

I have a P4 2.4Ghz system. How can I find out what chip I have so I can buy a new motherboard?
The games I want to play need a sound card that will handle directx 9.0c. The only cards I can find require a PCI-e slot. Since my motherboard does not have this I figure I might as well get a new board. What I don’t know is if I can use my current chip or not. All I know is that it is intel, P4, and 2,4 Ghz. So how do I find this out? Thanks.

You will need to change the motherboard. they aren’t very expensive. They range from AU$65 – 80 and AU$100 for a 3.0GhZ processor, but you will need to have DDR2 RAm with that which ranges from AU$30 for 512mb to AU$60 for a 1GB

Is there an option to fixing the sound on my Dell Dimension 4550 other that doing a system reinstall?
I have a Dell Dimension 4550 Desktop Computer and now have no sound. I chatted with a Dell technician and he advised me to do a Dell PC Restore by Symantec. I understand that this is the “easy” way to go, but I stand a chance in losing a lot of information on the computer. Is there something else I could try instead? Downloading a driver temporily restored the sound, but when I restarted the computer, the same problem persisted. Everything else works well on my computer. I’d appreciate any ideas.

pc restore meaning your computer will go back to its factory default settings and all your files will be deleted…
what you can do is if you have your windows OS(operating system) you can try repairing it… 1st insert your OS cd in your cdrom, then boot to cd (press f12) when you see the dell logo then choose boot to cdrom or onboard cdrom… then just follow the steps, it will ask you to press f8 then press enter to install then press “R” on the next page to choose repair… you wont loose any files if you do this instead it will possibly fix prob on your pc..
if you want you can do a pc restore. there’s more chance of fixing the prob.. just need to backup your files in a disk of flash drivedisk..

I would like to note that the AMD architecture, when used in multi processor applications, is much better than the intel core2 architecture. AMD’s onchip memory controller and HT system allows for much more bandwidth.
But that doesn’t affect you, you aren’t building a server or super computer.
Core 2 Duos are more expensive, but yes they are more powerful and energy efficient. An AMD Athlon X2 needs to be clocked 15% faster to be equivalent, which means a 2.4ghz amd athlon x2 will be faster than a 2.0ghz intel core 2 duo. Intels are usually better for overclocking. The E8400 and E8500 are known for going close to 4ghz on stock air cooling.
